Nepal Tourism Year 2011 opens today

Sixteen political parties have signed a written commitment to support the Nepal Tourism Year 2011 campaign.

The last major party to express commitment to support the campaign and not to call strikes and bandas during NTY 2011 was UCPN-Maoist. It was informed at a press meet organized to brief the media on the inauguration ceremony of NTY 2011.

According to Prachand Man Shrestha, CEO of Nepal Tourism Board, said the commitment from the parties have given assurance to celebrate and organize NTY 2011 for peaceful movement of tourists in Nepal.

He said Girija Prasad Koirala of the Nepali Congress, Jhanalath Khanal of theCPN-UML, Puspa Kamal Dahal of UCPN-Maoist, CP Mainali of the CPN-ML, Pashupati Samsher Rana of Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar of Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (Democratic) and Mahanta Thakur of Tarai-Madhesh Democratic Party are among the top leaders to sign the commitment paper.

The NTY 2011 will be inaugurated on Friday amid a gathering at Tundikhel. Prime Minister Madhav Nepal will open the campaign at 2 p.m. by lighting a peace torch brought from Lumbini, the birth place of Gautam Buddha.

The function will be attended by political party cadres, businessmen, government employees and students, among others. Dipak Thapa, the manager of the inauguration ceremony, said different rallies will begin at 12 p.m. from different places before converging at Tundikhel. The video clips of inauguration ceremony will be used in the promotion campaign across the world, according to NTY 2011 organizing committee. The committee has requested to all to carry national flags during the march.

Tourism Secretary Nagendra Prasad Ghimire said the opening ceremony will disseminate a positive message about Nepalīs tourism friendly image. He claimed that Nepal witnessed a slight improvement in tourist arrivals despite global decline in tourism industry in 2009. He said there was a 2 percent growth in tourist arrivals in 2009, while tourist arrivals in Asia and across the world had declined by 4 percent and 2 percent, respectively.
