Best Time to Visit Bhutan

  • Spring (March to May): This is the peak season for trekking and sightseeing. The weather is mild, with clear skies, and the landscape is lush and green, especially with the blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers. It’s also a great time to witness festivals like the Paro Tsechu.
  • Autumn (September to November): The weather is crisp and clear, with stunning visibility of the Himalayan peaks. This is ideal for outdoor activities like trekking and exploring Bhutan’s beautiful valleys. The autumn months also coincide with several cultural festivals, making it a vibrant time to experience Bhutanese culture.
  • While winter (December to February) is quieter and serene, it can be quite cold, especially in the mountain’s areas.
  • Summer (June to August) is the monsoon season, so rainfall can be heavy, making travel more challenging in some areas. However, Bhutan can be visited year-round.

Bhutan Travel Tips:

  • Visa & Permits: A Bhutanese visa is required, and travel must be arranged through a licensed tour operator.
  • Packing Essentials: Bring layered clothing, comfortable hiking shoes, and a rain jacket.
  • Altitude Awareness: Some areas are at high altitudes; stay hydrated and take it slow.
  • Cultural Etiquette: Dress modestly when visiting monasteries and dzongs, and always seek permission before taking photos of monks or religious sites.

Currency & Payment in Bhutan:

  • The Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) is the local currency, and cash is recommended in rural areas.
  • Indian Rupees (INR) are widely accepted.
  • US Dollars (USD), Euros (EUR), and other major currencies can be exchanged at banks, hotels, and authorized money exchange counters.
  • Credit & Debit Cards are accepted at high-end hotels, shops, and restaurants in cities like Thimphu and Paro, but cash is recommended for rural areas.
  • ATMs are available in major towns, but they may not always work with foreign cards, so carrying some local Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) is advisable.
