Tibet, Lhasa: The Land of Gods (11,850 ft.)

Lhasa, the second most populous city on the Tibetan Plateau, is one of the highest cities in the world, situated at an altitude of 3,490 meters. Serving as Tibet's religious capital since the mid-17th century, it is home to culturally significant Tibetan Buddhist sites such as the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Norbulingka Palace, and numerous monasteries. One of the largest monasteries in Tibet, occupying 250,000 square meters, houses around 7,700 monks and preserves many historical relics, Buddhist scriptures, arts, and crafts.

The Kathmandu and Lhasa Tour offers a well-rounded journey through the highlights of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Patan, and Lhasa, including visits to major monasteries, all packed into a neat itinerary that is perfect for all travelers!

Tips for the Kathmandu and Lhasa Tour:

  1. Permits for Tibet:

    • Traveling to Tibet requires a Tibet Travel Permit, which can only be obtained through a licensed tour operator. Independent travel to Tibet is not permitted. Most tours will handle the permit application.
  2. Altitude Adjustment:

    • Both Kathmandu (1,400 meters) and Lhasa (3,650 meters) are high-altitude cities. Be mindful of the altitude when traveling to Lhasa. It’s important to rest, stay hydrated, and take things slow in the first couple of days to avoid altitude sickness.
  3. Visa Requirements:

    • You will need a Nepal visa to enter Kathmandu (available on arrival for most nationalities) and a Chinese visa (or a Tibet Travel Permit) to enter Tibet.
  4. Cultural Sensitivity:

    • Both Nepal and Tibet are deeply spiritual places. When visiting temples and monasteries, dress modestly, remove shoes when required, and be respectful of local customs and rituals.
  5. Weather:

    • The best time to visit Kathmandu and Lhasa is from April to October, with spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) offering the most pleasant weather. Winter can be cold and harsh, especially in Tibet.
  6. Currency:

    • Nepal uses the Nepalese Rupee (NPR), and Tibet uses the Chinese Yuan (CNY). Make sure to exchange currency before arriving, as ATMs may be scarce in remote areas of Tibet.

Best Time to Visit:

The best months to visit are from April to October, when the weather is clear and moderate. Winter in Lhasa can be quite cold, and some sites may be closed during that time.
