Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trekking Route Built
A new trekking trail extending to the base camp of the seventh highest mountain in the world - Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 metres) - has been constructed at Mudi in Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-4, Myagdi district.
The Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality built the trail, which stretches from the Italy Base Camp at Mudi to the Swiss Base Camp site via the Japanese Camp site, at a cost of Rs 5.4 million, funded by the federal government in the fiscal year 2024/25.
The local community also contributed labour worth Rs 500,000 towards the construction of the 6.5-kilometre trail, informed Kul Bahadur Gharti, Secretary of the Dhaulagiri Mountain Trekking Trail Construction Users Committee. Gharti noted that the trail passes through a high-risk area between the Swiss and Japanese Camp sites due to glacial activity.
Furthermore, two traditional wooden resting places and two bridges have been constructed along the trail. The route also features four information boards and five signboards to assist trekkers. These infrastructures have been put in place to improve access to the Mt. Dhaulagiri base camp, he explained.
Additionally, approximately one kilometre of stone-paved stairs has been built along the trail, added Janak Dhanuk, Sub-Engineer at the rural municipality. He also mentioned that the previously narrow and winding paths have been widened to enhance accessibility.
Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality Chairperson Prem Prasad Pun stated that the municipality has prioritized widening narrow paths along cliffs and forested areas to ensure the trekking trail is safer and more accessible.
