Bhaktapur, literally translating to "Place of Devotees," is an ancient Newa city in the eastern corner of the Kathmandu Valley. Also known as Khwopa, this city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its well-preserved historical monuments, traditional architecture, and vibrant culture. Bhaktapur is a timeless gem that offers visitors a glimpse into Nepal's medieval past, filled with intricate wood carvings, pagoda-style temples, and centuries-old traditions.
Bhaktapur Durbar Square is a spectacular ensemble of pagoda and shikhara-style temples surrounding the Palace of Fifty-five Windows. This square serves as a stunning showcase of Nepal's ancient artistry, with golden effigies of kings, guardian deities, and meticulously crafted wood carvings on every strut, lintel, tympanum, and window. Key attractions within the square include:
The Lion Gate (1696 A.D.) – Flanked by two large stone lions and images of Bhairav and Ugrachandi, the gate is an imposing entrance to the palace complex.
The Golden Gate – Often described as the most beautiful and artistically crafted gate in the world, it is adorned with mythical creatures, the goddess Kali, and Garuda.
The Palace of Fifty-five Windows – Built in 1427 A.D., this palace is a masterpiece of woodcarving and an architectural jewel of the Malla dynasty.
The Art Gallery – Home to an exquisite collection of Hindu and Buddhist paintings from different historical periods (closed on Tuesdays).
The Statue of King Bhupatindra Malla – An iconic statue of the art-loving king, depicted in an act of worship.
One of the most famous and tallest pagoda-style temples in Nepal, Nyatapola was built by King Bhupatindra Malla in 1702 A.D. The temple is dedicated to Siddhi Lakshmi, a tantric goddess, and is renowned for its massive structure. Each of the five tiers of its stairway is guarded by pairs of legendary figures, with the lowest tier featuring the strongest, two famed wrestlers.
Located near Nyatapola Temple, Bhairav Nath Temple is a three-tiered pagoda dedicated to Lord Bhairav, an incarnation of Shiva. Originally a modest structure built by King Jagat Jyoti Malla, it was later expanded by King Bhupatindra Malla.
Built in 1427 A.D., this temple is believed to have been constructed from the wood of a single tree. Nearby, the Peacock Window is a masterpiece of woodcarving, often referred to as Nepal’s "Mona Lisa." The adjacent Dattatraya Square houses exquisite monasteries (Math) with elaborate carvings and artifacts.
A large rectangular pond near the city's main gate, Siddha Pokhari was constructed during the reign of King Yakshya Malla in the 15th century. On clear days, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayas.
A stone temple dedicated to Batsala Devi, this site is famous for its large bronze bell, which was rung during curfew in ancient times. The bell is known as "the bell of barking dogs" because its sound prompts dogs in the vicinity to howl.
A smaller replica of Kathmandu's famous Pashupatinath Temple, this shrine is known for its intricate erotic carvings on its wooden struts. Built by King Yakshya Malla, it holds significant religious and artistic value.
This lively square is home to Nyatapola Temple and Bhairav Nath Temple and serves as a cultural hub where traditional dances, festivals, and ceremonies take place.
A must-visit for those interested in local crafts, Pottery Square is where artisans create clay pots using traditional techniques. Visitors can witness the process and even try their hand at pottery-making.
Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, this temple is located on a hill overlooking Bhaktapur. It is a popular pilgrimage site where devotees pray for wisdom and prosperity.
A short drive from Bhaktapur, Changu Narayan Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Nepal, dating back to the 4th century. It is known for its intricate stone sculptures and stunning pagoda-style architecture.
