Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple)

Perched on a hill west of Kathmandu, Swayambhunath is a sacred Buddhist site that dates back to around 250 B.C. The stupa features a white dome symbolizing purity and a golden spire with 13 tiers representing the stages of enlightenment. The iconic Buddha eyes on all four sides watch over the valley.

A legend states that Kathmandu Valley was once a lake, and the bodhisattva Manjushri drained it, allowing civilization to flourish. Pilgrims and tourists alike visit the site, climbing 360 steps to reach the summit, where they are rewarded with a panoramic view of the valley and the Himalayas.

Boudhanath Stupa

Boudhanath, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world, stands 36 meters high. Built in the 5th century A.D., it serves as a center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. The stupa features massive mandala-style platforms and is surrounded by monasteries, traditional shops, and Tibetan prayer flags. Every year, thousands of pilgrims and monks visit this spiritual site, walking clockwise around the stupa while chanting prayers.

Pashupatinath Temple

Located along the banks of the Bagmati River, Pashupatinath is one of the most sacred Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. This golden-roofed temple, adorned with intricate wood carvings, is a major pilgrimage site. The temple complex, spanning 281 hectares, contains hundreds of Shiva lingams, shrines, and ashrams.

During the annual Maha Shivaratri festival, thousands of devotees from Nepal and India gather here to offer prayers and participate in rituals. Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the temple but can view the temple and cremation ceremonies from the eastern bank of the Bagmati River.

Budhanilkantha Temple

Situated 9 km north of Kathmandu, Budhanilkantha is a revered Hindu temple featuring a large reclining statue of Lord Vishnu resting on a bed of cosmic serpents. The statue, carved from a single black stone, is believed to date back to the 7th century. According to legend, King Pratap Malla was warned in a dream that visiting this temple would result in his death, and since then, Nepalese kings have avoided visiting the site.

Balaju Water Garden

Located 5 km northwest of Kathmandu, Balaju Water Garden features 22 stone water spouts carved in the shape of sea dragons. The park also contains fish ponds, religious shrines, and a replica of the Budhanilkantha statue. A swimming pool is available for visitors.

Garden of Dreams

This beautifully restored neoclassical garden is an oasis in the heart of Kathmandu. Originally built in the early 20th century, the garden features European-style pavilions, fountains, and a peaceful atmosphere, making it a perfect place to relax amidst the city's hustle and bustle.

Asan and Indra Chowk

These bustling marketplaces are among the oldest commercial hubs in Kathmandu. Asan is famous for its spice, tea, and brassware shops, while Indra Chowk is known for its bead and textile markets. Visitors can experience traditional Nepali street life, sample local snacks, and shop for souvenirs.

Thamel

Kopan Monastery
